The 2011 Dishonest Reporting Award: The Guardian

The 2011 Dishonest Reporting Award: The Guardian

The biggest shock isn’t who won the award but the fact that The Guardian has never taken the accolade before. A steady stream of biased and sometimes downright viciously anti-Israel articles and opinion pieces culminated in Deborah Orr’s anti-Semitic take on the Gilad Shalit prisoner swap.

But Deborah Orr was not the only reason that The Guardian stood head and shoulders above other media outlets vying for this year’s Dishonest Reporter Award. From PaliLeaks, op-ed space for terrorists, its response to Judge Richard Goldstone’s mea culpa, and more – we had to write a separate Top 10 Reasons The Guardian Won.

Bibi Coverage: One Speech, Multiple Stories

Bibi Coverage: One Speech, Multiple Stories

Israeli PM Netanyahu’s address to Congress has provoked a variety of reactions. While Netanyahu delivered one speech, how the media consuming public heard it was entirely dependent on the focus or interpretation and possibly even the bias of the particular media outlet or journalist writing the story. And the story itself becomes dependent on the lens through which it is delivered.

For some media outlets, the focus was on what Netanyahu was prepared to concede in pursuit of peace with the Palestinians and the painful concessions necessary. For others the interpretation was of a hardline address presented in terms of Netanyahu’s apparent “rejectionism” and unwillingness to compromise.

Flotilla 2: NY Times Sinks the Truth

Flotilla 2: NY Times Sinks the Truth

According to a New York Times report, a second flotilla of vessels led by the Turkish Mavi Marmara is due to sail for Gaza within the next few months. Last time, the real motives and agenda of those involved in the flotilla only became clear after Israeli commandos were attacked by extremists brandishing weapons.

Last time, the flotilla organizers were allowed to sell a false narrative of so-called “peace activists” delivering humanitarian aid to Gazans suffering a humanitarian crisis as a result of an Israeli blockade.

How Moral Equivalence Erodes Accurate Reporting

HR Comment: How Moral Equivalence Erodes Accurate Reporting

When Judge Richard Goldstone published his famous op-ed reconsidering the Goldstone Report, he – perhaps unintentionally – revealed one of the predominant biases of the Goldstone Committee that produced the report. The committee, it appears, was operating under a deep-set assumption of moral equivalence between Israel and Hamas.

The same bias of moral equivalence can be seen in the coverage of the recent violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

While virtually all mainstream news outlets covered the story as an action-reaction, started by Hamas’s attack on an Israeli school bus and carried on by Israel’s retaliatory strikes on targets in Gaza, the coverage gives the misleading impression that Israel and Hamas are morally equal.

Battle Over Goldstone Report Continues

Battle Over Goldstone Report Continues

Judge Richard Goldstone’s Washington Post op-ed admitting he was wrong about key elements in his infamous Goldstone Report on the war in Gaza unleashed a torrent of media coverage over the past week.

In his original report, Goldstone wrote that Israel and Hamas were both guilty of war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity in the Gaza War. One of the most serious charges leveled against Israel was that it intentionally targeted Palestinian civilians. The charge, Goldstone wrote last week, was wrong. While Goldstone did not fully repudiate his report, he acknowledged there were flaws.

Although the story never reached the scale that had accompanied the publication of the Goldstone Report in 2009, virtually every media outlet covered Goldstone’s about-face fairly, if less dramatically.

Anti-Israel Bias at Baptist Press

Anti-Israel Bias at Baptist Press
Dr. Randy White

I’ve become increasingly distressed that Baptist Press, my own denominations news service, seems to have such a pro-Palestinian approach to coverage of issues in Israel. They primarily do not cover any of the significant events of Israel, and when they do it typically puts Israel in a bad light.

Two articles distributed March 29 are typical of the BP coverage. The first article contained these words:

Reuters Redefines Terrorist Attack

Reuters Redefines Terrorist Attack

March 24, 2011 15:13 by Simon Plosker

Nothing captures the media’s attention like a bomb in the heart of Jerusalem. At this time, one person was killed and over 30 wounded as a bomb detonated next to a busy bus stop near the city’s central bus station and international conference center.

Incredibly, Reuters included the following in its report:

Police said it was a “terrorist attack” — Israel’s term for a Palestinian strike. It was the first time Jerusalem had been hit by such a bomb since 2004.

We’ve long criticized Reuters for its refusal to call terror by its name.

Why Won’t the Media Say Elizabeth Taylor Was Jewish?

Why Won’t the Media Say Elizabeth Taylor Was Jewish?
Submitted by Eric Herschthal

America’s best newspapers–The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The L.A. Times–all wrote richly detailed obituaries for Elizabeth Taylor, the Hollywood icon who died of heart failure this week, at 79. But no matter how richly detailed, every single one of these papers didn’t say a word about Taylor’s conversion to Judaism when she was 27. Why?

Taylor died Wednesday of congestive heart failure, and because Jewish customs call for a burial within 48 hours of death, the funeral took place on Thursday. Details HERE.

HELEN THOMAS: A “MODERN-DAY HAMAN”?
by Chana Ya’ar (IsraelNationalNews)

Former journalist Helen Thomas told an interviewer for a pornographic magazine recently that her anti-Zionism is fully intended.

The 90-year-old modern-day Haman was fired from her long-time job as a White House correspondent for Hearst Corporation for virulently anti-Israel remarks. Not exactly a fluffy bunny herself, she told Playboy magazine she “knew exactly what she was doing” when she said that “Jews don’t belong in Palestine,” and they should all “go home to Poland, Germany and the United States.”

The double standard in the media’s coverage of Israel

Mideast Revolutions Spread: More Hypocrisy Exposed

HonestReporting recently commented on how the coverage of the Egyptian uprising had revealed a significant double standard in the media’s coverage of Israel.

While the current events in Libya do not necessarily have any direct linkages to Israel, nonetheless, the situation has continued to further expose the hypocrisy of some of Israel’s detractors.

Boycott movement fails to make financial impact but damages Israel’s global image

Yedioth Ahronoth

Trionfale Market, suburban Rome. A dozen activists dressed in produce vendor outfits bearing the logo of Israeli produce exporter Carmel Agrexco descend upon the street, offering shoppers avocado smeared with blood.

“Madam, buy our avocado and support the occupation,” one of them yells towards a spectator. “The color of the avocado is red because the water that we Israelis steal is so good.

“It’s the best water in Palest… oh, Israel. Buy Carmel. It’s very tasty,” he adds.

Some passersby ignore the spectacle, while others take interest, asking to look at brochures that the activists distributed.

This anti-Israeli protest is only a fraction of the growing movement that uses demonstrations and media outlets to promote the boycott of Israeli products across Europe.

Egypt uprising reveals double standard in media coverage of Israel

HR Comment: Egypt Exposes Media Hypocrisy
February 7, 2011 16:52 by Simon Plosker

The intense coverage of the uprising in Egypt – covered by nearly every journalist in the region – has revealed a significant double standard in the media’s coverage of Israel. The relative decline in coverage of Israel draws attention to the vastly disproprtionate amount of attention Israel receives in the world press, at the expense of coverage of other parts of the Middle East. As a result, relatively minor events in Israel are reported, discussed and analyzed well beyond their importance, while entire movements in places like Egypt are ignored entirely.

The question needs to be asked – is the mainstream media giving its readers the best coverage of the region?

Anti-Israel fiction foisted as fact, Carter sued

Lawsuit: Carter Guilty of Consumer Fraud, Foists Lies on Readers

by David Lev

While former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has a perfect right to his anti-Israel opinions – and certainly has the right to publish a book full of those opinions – he does not have the right to fob off a work of fiction as fact. That, says Israeli activist attorney Nitzana Darshan-Leitner, is what has earned him the opprobrium of dozens of people who bought his book, “Palestine: Peace or Apartheid.” And now, says Darshan-Leitner, she is representing those unhappy customers in a class-action lawsuit against Carter, in order to get them a refund.

Of course, Darshan-Leitner tells Israel National News, the issue is not simply one of consumer fraud. “During the trial, we will of course have to examine the facts in question, and we will of course unveil the falsity of much of what he writes. Carter makes numerous claims in the book that he knows to be false, and we know that he knows them to be false.”

IBA Close Up – Israel’s Image in the International Media

IBA Close Up – Israel’s Image in the International Media

Last night’s edition of IBA’s Close Up featured a discussion on Israel’s image in the international media. In the studio were PR professional and ex-Government Press Office employee Jason Pearlman alongside the AP’s Jerusalem bureau chief Joe Federman, who happens to be the chair of the Foreign Press Association.

I respect Joe as someone who has always been prepared to appear on panel discussions for HonestReporting Missions, arguing the case for the foreign press in a friendly and civilized fashion. However, I really can’t agree with some of the statements he made on this show.

For example, he says that the Palestinians are really on the ball, supplying foreign journalists with reactions to stories that they don’t even know have happened yet. Come on Joe – doesn’t that tell you something?! Doesn’t that make you just a little bit suspicious as to the veracity of the story?

Comprehensive study reveals London Review of Books presents ‘starkly one-sided and fringe approach’ against Jewish state. Israeli, Jewish contributors among harshest critics
Yaniv Halily

British organization Just Journalism on Monday published a scathing study on the way Israel is being covered by London Review of Books – one of the most important and widely circulated literary magazines in the world.

According to the comprehensive study, the magazine systematically publishes articles clearly criticizing Israel. “The State of Israel wishes to inculcate in its soldiers a neo-Nazi ideology wrapped in Judaism” or “the Israelis think of Arabs much as they think of chickens of cats” are only two of the many statements which appear regularly in the prestigious magazine’s articles.

Yes, Pro-Israel Harper is Mentally Fit to be Prime Minister

Reading reporter Murray Dobbin’s bizarre and unnerving bias regarding Stephen Harper and his mental ability to be prime minister raises the question as to whether or not this writer is mentally fit to be a Vancouver Sun columnist.

Harper on Israel: Is the Prime Minister mentally sound?

By Murray Dobbin 11 Nov 2010

Watching and listening to Stephen Harper’s bizarre and unnerving speech about anti-Semitism and Israel raises the question as to whether or not the man is mentally fit to be prime minister.

In effect, Harper has taken the position of being Israel’s defender no matter what – in other words, this commitment comes before his duty as prime minister, before his duty to represent Canada’s interests abroad, before his role of elected representative. Harper is a defender of Israel no matter the consequences for Canada…

MEDIA TRYING TO MAKE CRISIS OUT OF BUILDING FOR JEWS IN THE CAPITAL OF JERUSALEM!

MEDIA TRYING TO MAKE CRISIS OUT OF BUILDING FOR JEWS IN THE CAPITAL OF JERUSALEM!

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu (Arutz Sheva News)

Mainstream media, led by Israel’s anti-nationalist newspapers, are trying to make a crisis out of previously approved homes for Jews in Jerusalem, Cabinet Secretary Tzvi Hauser told Voice of Israel government radio Wednesday morning. Foreign media often take their cue on local issues from colleagues in the country they are covering.

Hauser stated that building for Jews in the capital will continue. He added that there is no crisis between Israel and the United States over the routine public notice of another stage in the long bureaucratic process before construction begins on more than 1,000 new homes in Har Homa in southern Jerusalem.

Anti-Israel Journalism in the Globe and Mail

Globe and Mail Reporter Engages in Anti-Israel Advocacy Journalism (October 20, 2010)
Patrick Martin’s anti-Israel advocacy reporting must be challenged.

News reporters are duty bound to avoid expressing their subjective viewpoint or willfully promoting social & political causes. Yet sometimes reporters’ opinions and agendas, whether conscious or unconscious, are revealed in their news coverage.

Instead of doing straightforward reporting, some reporters use the public platforms of the media outlets they work for to slip in their own thoughts, frame a story’s narrative in a particular light, use partisan language, or use unreliable sources in the pursuit of advocacy journalism.

A recent violator of the most basic precepts of neutral and objective reporting comes from the Globe and Mail’s Mideast bureau chief, Patrick Martin, for his engagement in anti-Israel advocacy journalism.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BORDER CLASH BETWEEN LEBANON AND ISRAEL!

THE TRUTH ABOUT BORDER CLASH BETWEEN LEBANON AND ISRAEL!

SHOCKER: UN BACKS UP ISRAEL IN LEBANON BORDER CLASH!
(Israel Today News)

To the surprise of many Israelis, the United Nations confirmed that Israeli soldiers were unjustly attacked by Lebanese Army forces during routine maintenance along the border this week.

A member of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) released a statement noting that the Israeli army had notified the world body of its intention to conduct maintenance work very close to the Blue Line, which is the internationally-recognized border.

Israel regularly cuts down large trees in the area between the Israeli security fence and the Blue Line (which is still sovereign Israeli territory) in order to deny Lebanese terrorist forces cover for attacks on Israeli border towns.

“I can confirm that we received notification from the IDF about the work and we passed the information on to the Lebanese Army,” a Hungarian diplomat working with UNIFIL stated.

In the aftermath of the Gaza flotilla incident, a significant number of musicians have refused to perform in Israel. Recycling Photos for Anti-Israel Media Bias

Telegraph Caught Recycling Gaza War Photo to Distort Today’s Reality

Why does the Daily Telegraph choose to reuse an image from the 2009 Gaza conflict to inaccurately portray the present day?

Photo bias is one of the most insidious forms of anti-Israel media bias and HonestReporting has addressed a number of recent examples, including AFP/Getty and Reuters wire services. Sometimes, however, the newspapers themselves are responsible for misusing imagery.

The following story and accompanying photo appeared in the UK’s biggest selling broadsheet, the Daily Telegraph, on 17 June 2010:

MCC urges governments to end Gaza blockade

MCC urges governments to end Gaza blockade
Gladys Terichow
June 4, 2010

WINNIPEG, Man. – Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is urging the governments of the U.S. and Canada to work constructively within the international community to restore the normal flow of goods and people through Gaza-Israel border crossings.

In letters to the U.S. president and Canada’s foreign affairs minister, MCC urges them to support an impartial and independent investigation into Israel’s deadly response to the Free Gaza flotilla on May 31.

The convoy, carrying 10,000 tonnes of much-needed aid, was attempting to enter the Gaza Strip by sea and break the Israeli blockade that has a devastating effect on the livelihoods and lives of Gaza’s 1.5 million Palestinians. The convoy was intercepted by the Israeli military before reaching Gaza and clashes led to the deaths of nine people.

Daryl Byler, MCC’s representative in the region, said hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza live in dire conditions without employment and basic supplies because of the Israeli blockade.

The World’s Oldest Disease – Anti-Semitism

The World’s Oldest Disease
by Jan Markell
www.olivetreeviews.org
June 14. 2010

The world remains sick with a very old disease for which no cure has ever been found. It tends to go into remission now and then, but it always reappears as virulent as ever. It even develops into new strains. Some have called it a lethal obsession. It is called anti-Semitism, and if the Jews did not exist, some anti-Semite would invent him. It’s that bad.

The Helen Thomas story is now old but it was very revealing. In just a brief moment of time, she spewed in microcosm what kings, generals, fuhrers, pharoahs, and Muslim extremists have done in legion. She tried to dispossess the Jews. None of Israel’s enemies have any knowledge of what the Bible has to say about the land or the people of Israel. None of her enemies experience even a nano-second of guilt for telling the Jews to go back to Auschwitz. Even though I researched the Holocaust to write the Anita Dittman story, Trapped in Hitler’s Hell, I cannot imagine the haunting thought of being told to go back to Auschwitz had I ever been interned there. But in demonstrations after the May 31 flotilla fiasco in Gaza, signs sprouted up all over the world saying that the Jews should all pack up and head to Auschwitz, which is now a solemn memorial museum. In its own way, it says “never again” just as all of Israel does when the subject of the Holocaust comes up.

For someone to tell a Jew in Israel to “go home” also makes no sense because they are home.

The characterizations of the Jewish state range from a society so evil that it should not be allowed to exist to a villainous nation that is responsible for a) the suffering of millions of innocent Palestinian men, women and children; b) the lack of Mideast peace; therefore c) the Muslim world’s anger at the West; and therefore d) Islamic terrorism itself.

The plain truth about Israel

The plain truth about Israel

Next time somebody asks you to rethink the American-Israel relationship, have them consider this

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | In other times, Hearst Newspapers White House Correspondent Helen Thomas’s demand that the Jews “get the hell out of Palestine,” and go back to Poland, Germany and America would have been front page news in every newspaper in the US the day after the story broke.

In other times, had the dean of the White House Correspondents Association expressed such hatred for the Jews, the White House would have immediately removed her accreditation rather than wait three days to criticize her.

In other times, the White House Correspondents Association would have expelled her.

In other times, her employer — Hearst Newspapers — would have fired her.
