Last week I watched the Revelation debate between Dr. Calvin Smith and Stephen Sizer on the internet, which was originally presented on live television on the 9th November 2011. The subject was “Has the Church Replaced Israel?”

Now I have mixed feelings about these events. A skillful debater can be dead wrong and yet come across as very convincing. If his opponent cannot counter an argument – even when it is fallacious – then the skillful debater can sway a crowd’s support to his own cause.

Certain that U.S. support for Israel depends on pro-Israel American evangelicals, the Religious and Evangelical Left are targeting evangelicals with their latest arguments for discrediting Israel.

This week, “Evangelicals for Middle East Understanding” (EMEU) convened at a San Francisco Presbyterian church to hash out their latest anti-Israel strategies. Ostensibly the problem as they identify it is that too many U.S. evangelicals are wedded to Old Testament promises of a perpetual Promised Land for the Jews. Anti-Israel activists like to showcase besieged Middle East Christians as arguments against a Jewish Israel, as though Judaism rather than radical Islam were their chief threat. They also like to portray Christian Zionists as motivated by apocalyptic end-times scenarios.

The Peace Plan, Israel, Rick Warren and the Lie

Hamas leadership has just let it be known that it will accept a Palestinian state set within the 1967 borders as those borders stood before the Six-Day War of that year. This they will accept, dropping their demands that a Palestinian state must encompass a much broader territory.

The Hamas top strong man, Mahmoud Zahar, told the Palestinian news agency, Ma’an, that he would be willing to accept the installing of a Palestinian state “on any part of Palestine,” rather than holding to the group’s previous demand that such a state be formed from “the [Jordan] river to the [Mediterranean] sea.”

Paganism and the Church’s separation with her Jewish Roots

On October 27, it was originally going to be screened in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, doubtless hoping to appeal to young evangelical Congressional staffers, whose numbers and influence likely will increase in the new Congress. Perhaps the most wonderful trend within certain segments of the Christian church over the past 20 years has been an awakening to the truths laid out in Brown’s work. Many Christians have come to recognize the centrality of the Jewish people in God’s plan for the ages, the Jewish roots of their own faith and the church’s dramatic historical shortfall in appropriating these realities.

Sadly, however, many other segments of the church have not only failed to acknowledge the long historical slide away from their Jewish roots, but they have actually turned their backs on the clear warnings of Scripture, joining the growing global slide toward anti-Semitism.

I got an interesting e-mail this morning. It’s about another conference is going on right now (March 12-17, 2010), but this one is not quite in the same category as the awesome, Bible believing ones mentioned yesterday. Now, I don’t know very much about these things, but it seems to me that the thing that makes this particular conference kind of shocking is that this one’s at Bethlehem Bible College in Bethlehem – the birth place of Jesus Christ (Matthew 2:6). Bethlehem means “House of Bread“, and it is here in this very place that the “Bread of Life,” the Word (the logos), was born to one day bring peace to the world. But ironically, it appears to me, the little brown blogger of very little brain, that those who claim to know Jesus Christ and believe in His Word are meeting in His place of birth to deny His very Word, and talk about their own ideas for peace.

They say that the aim of this conference is to:

…equip the global church to understand Scripture as it relates to the Palestinian context, and to discuss the theological importance of Peace and Justice in an Evangelical context.

Our hope is to provide a forum for evangelicals who take the Bible seriously to prayerfully seek a well-informed awareness of issues of peace, justice and reconciliation which are contextually sensitive as well profound to scriptural scholarship.

Replacementtheology “is the view that the church is the new or true Israel that haspermanently replaced or superseded Israel as the people of God.”[1] Another term, often found in academic circles,for replacement theology is supersessionism. Replacement theology has been the fuel that has energized Medieval anti-Semitism, Eastern European pogroms, the Holocaust and contemporary disdain for the modern state of Israel. Mike Vlach notes: “The acceptance or rejection ofsupersessionism may also influence how one views the modern state of Israel and events in the Middle East.”[2] Wherever replacement theology has flourished, the Jews have had to run for cover.
